Velvety red with berry, currant and light spice. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long finish. Builds on the palate. Not sure it's on the same level as 2003 though. Score range: 89-91

91-93 Barrel sample. A finely balanced wine, with the steel and tannins of Saint-Estéphe tempered with hugely ripe, concentrated black plum and dark fig flavors. This is elegant while also being powerful.
Chateau Phelan-Segur is an impressive property with a large park and great views of the Gironde. Since 1985 the Gardinier family have spent a lot on renovating, which has raised the quality of the wine. In 2003 they joined the Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel group, for the best of the non-classified growths in the Medoc.
